70,881 people evacuated from danger to date

74 people evacuated from danger this week

26 trips into deoccupied and frontline territories this week

The Russian campaign of terror continued and escalated last week, with another record-setting drone and rocket attack on Kyiv and Dnipro. 21 people were killed and more than 120 injured, including children. This is a cruel and desperate response to the increasingly effective actions of the Ukrainian military, which in the last two weeks has mostly paralyzed Russian logistics in the occupied territories and inflicted serious damage to Russia’s oil refineries and storage facilities.

Despite this silver lining, the personal experience of our Ukrainina volunteers was absolutely harrowing - a sleepless night with roaring death-carrying projectiles approaching from all directions. Russia has also increased its usage of hypersonic rockets, which emit a horrifying deep sound that rattles the entire city. This terror has only strengthened the resolve of our volunteers to continue their noble work, though the timing of the attacks made it harder for them to submit reports to us on time.

Story

Rolls for Hanna

In Kaniv, Oleksiy and his volunteers, who are part of Oleksandr D. 's network, try to keep an eye on a lonely 80-year-old widow. We'll call her Hanna. She comes from Kyiv, where she had been a teacher, then a factory worker. Along with her husband, Hanna had only one son, who was accidentally electrocuted. After the death of their only child, the couple clung to each other, moving from Kyiv to Kaniv to get away from the pain of their old life.

In Kaniv, things seemed to stabilize for a while, but then the husband developed an illness he believed to be incurable. Depressed and frightened that he would die with no one to care for him, he jumped out of a sixth-story window, leaving Hanna alone. Now, 80, Hanna lives a largely isolated life, with only occasional visits from social services. She has severe leg pain, which restricts her movement, but her two-room apartment is nonetheless always spotless.

Oleksiy and his volunteers try to do what they can to look in on Hanna and help her feel cared for and loved. Recently, the team distributed ready-to-bake rolls to some of the disabled and needy residents of Kaniv. The rolls were perfect for Hanna, because she was able to bake them with minimal effort and proudly serve them to her guests. When the volunteers stopped in for a visit, Hanna served them the rolls.

“Oh, they turned out so delicious!" she said. "Crispy… I greased them with oil. You've completely spoiled me!”

Moments like these mean so much more than bread to isolated seniors like Hanna. They are a tangible sign of human connection and care, reminding these seniors that they remain a valued part of the community.
