Losing Lyman
Ukraine is losing Lyman, it seems. We’ve been able to witness it first-hand as this Donbas town has been the focus for Natalia’s team in the last year. Methodically, street by street Natalia was able to deliver aid there until last fall. At some point she was no longer able to deliver the aid into the city herself and was forced to leave it at a drop-off point, from where this aid was delivered further either using military armored vehicles or local activists. During her last trip though the situation in Lyman had become so dire, that no inbound traffic was going into Lyman. Many of Lyman residents that used to rely on our help have abandoned the city and as usual tried to survive in nearby villages to not go too far away from their home in futile hopes of somehow waiting out the war. Yet some people remained in the city. At this point the only way for the aid to get into Lyman is for people stubbornly staying in Lyman to venture out to the nearby villages pick up the aid and somehow get it back into town, all of it with unending artillery duels, drones and KAB attacks that attempt to dislodge Ukrainian fighters still defending this small town.
This has been a rough month for Timur and his team. Things finally seemed to be back on track. They recovered from the damage to his family’s apartment and they were starting long awaited vehicle repairs to allow them to deliver aid further. Unfortunately the winter weather and Russian attacks have been unrelenting.
The deep freeze and lack of consistent heating has caused the water pipes to burst. The whole apartment was flooded and he had to spend several days cleaning up. Other team members continued the aid deliveries as he worked to salvage and clean up the apartment.
