Report from Nova Osokorivka

Tetiana P. reports on her trip to the villages of Stara and Nova Osokorivka in the Kherson Region, during which the team delivered 260 household supply kits to the locals.

We weren’t allowed into Nova Osokorivka itself. The situation there is very bad. Many Shahed and FPV drones are flying there and they are destroying people’s homes. The Shaheds are starting many house fires. The locals manage to put out some of them, but other houses burn completely to the ground.

The residents fight the fires on their own, because fire brigades can no longer reach them. They also repair everything themselves — they fixed the damaged water supply system, and restored the electricity. The village alderman says the locals have now become “professional electricians.” Distribution of the aid we brought took place at 5:00 a.m. People move around the village mostly in the evening and at night. In Old Osokorivka, the situation is much easier for now.

Inna’s Team Steps in after Dnipro Attacks

Russia has continued to terrorize Ukrainians in major cities. Recently, the Dnipro city center came under massive attacks. The attacks went on for several days, all around the clock. Inna’s team, which already has a well-run, established process for responding to such emergencies, set up their mobile station early in the morning. The station provided people with snacks, warm drinks, and psychological support. The volunteers helped survivors cope with their acute stress and referred them to government services, which were also present onsite.

When the World Shrinks to a Bowl of Porridge

Oleksiy P., who heads one of Oleksandr D’s network of teams in Kaniv, wrote to us about the poignant story of Oleh, a 57-year-old man with mental illness from the village of Oleksandrivka in the Kirovohrad Region. Despite his own limitations, Oleh takes care of his elderly, sick mother. They live alone with no caring relatives or friends nearby, subsisting on the mother’s tiny pension.

Their whole life is a quiet, invisible struggle for survival. Oleh's clothes are neglected and old. In his eyes there is that special kind of confusion that only people who feel lost in the vast world have.

"Is it really free?" he asked when we handed him the aid package. Oleh couldn't believe that someone had just decided to help him and his mother. But the real heartbreak happened the next day. Oleh came to meet us again, not to ask for help, but simply to say “thank you” from his mother.

“We ate so much porridge! For the first time in two months, we were able to eat without dividing one portion between the two of us."
